Thomas Aaron Smith, 79, of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, passed away at home surrounded by his family on September 2, 2026. Thom was born on May 31, 1947, in Knoxville to Margaret Sue Thurmer Smith and Lloyd Everett Smith Sr. Thom was the brother to Lloyd Everett Smith, Jr. (Priscilla Smith), Robert Thurmer Smith (Lynda Smith), and Sarah Sue Smith Wilson (L.C. Wilson). Thom grew up in Lafollette, Clinton, and Lake City, Tennessee. He graduated from Lake City High School, Tennessee Wesleyan College, and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Thom was also a veteran of the Army National Guard.
He is preceded in death by his parents Margaret Sue Thurmer Smith and Lloyd Everett Smith Sr., and his brother Lloyd Everett Smith Jr.
Thom was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. Thom was married to his wife Boydie Lynn Thompson Smith for 56 years. His family included son Matthew Aaron Smith (Angela Mikeal Smith), grandchildren Riley Aaron Smith, Ethan Mikeal Yonce, Caden Lane Smith, Adam Blake Yonce, and Addison Elizabeth Smith with special ANT Frances Begley Morris, Pineville, Kentucky.
Thom will be remembered as a dedicated Roane County Educator, Principal, Vocational Director, and Director of Teacher Career Development at the Tennessee State Department of Education, Nashville, Tennessee. After retirement, he enjoyed working in his yard, creating countless woodworking projects and loving his grandchildren. He will also be remembered as a dedicated member and Elder of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Thom’s name to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Arrangements will be made at a later date.
